Meet the teacher

Hello all! Last night was kindergarten orientation and I got to meet my 27 kindergartners, possibly 28 by today. I was so nervous and excited at the same time. There was a moment that I just blurted out, "I'm so nervous!" in front of 100+ people. The words just didn't come out of my mouth and that's all I could think of to say. I forgot how young they are still and I'm not sure I can do this. Can't I just get them after October, after they are taught the rules and routines. It was really nice hearing parents say how cute and kid friendly my room is. After all the hard work, it is nice to have the recognition. Time for professional development!

Where It All Goes Down

My room is S-L-O-W-L-Y coming along.  We don't start school until after Labor Day, September 7th to be exact.  Here is an update of my classroom but as you can tell, it is not complete yet and there is still more work to be done.

I will post more pictures soon.

Teacher Talk Tuesday

Since I only have two years under my belt, I feel like I have so much to learn still and is in no condition to give advice to new teachers since I am new myself.  But I am going to give it a shot. I think my only advice to new teachers is to not be afraid to follow your heart and make mistakes!  We all make mistakes and learn from them, just like our students.  No one is perfect.  During my first year I will get so nervous during evaluation time that I have an anxiety attack and want to vomit because I was so scared and want everything to be perfect (but we all know that is impossible).  So now I have learned to just be myself and pretend that the principal is not there :)

Meet the Teacher Monday

Tell us a little something about you...

I was born and raised in California and now live in the rainy city known as Seattle. I am 23 years old and have two furry babies, a german shepherd and a pug.  I am not marry but happily living with my boyfriend.

How long have you been teaching?

I am going on my third year of teaching.  For the past two years, I have been working as an ELL teacher in kindergarten.  My dream has finally came true, I am now having my own classroom after two years.  I love being an ELL teacher but it is nice to finally have your own space and your own kiddos rather than immersing yourself in another teacher's classroom.

You might not know...

I cannot draw and not so crafty.  But thanks to the blogging world, I can now look somewhat crafty and artsy.  My students can draw better than I can! That is not a lie either.  I am addicted to iced passion tea lemonade and iced green tea lemonade.  In order for me to not be cranky, I need some every morning!

What are you looking forward to this school year?

I am looking forward to having my own classroom with 29 K babies and having a WILD year!  To see my little munchkins grow as unique individuals and become passionate about learning.  And also, finishing my masters in reading specialist!!!!

What do you need to improve?

One biggest thing that I need to improve on is my shyness.  I tend to be VERY shy when I first meet new people so this is something I need to learn how to get over since I will be meeting a lot of parents next monday.  Also, to be better at organizing!  As far as academic goes, I would like to improve on my mini-lessons for readers and writer's workshop.

What teaching supplies can you NOT live without?

  • laminator
  • SMART board (unfortunately I need to learn how to live without it this year)
  • printer
  • easel
  • flair pens
  • my starbucks lemonade
  • my carpet

Math Tubs

Since I cannot work on my classroom today, I decided to do work at home.  I have been cutting for hours and I am so sick of it.  I made labels for my math tubs for my math workstations, inspired by Debbie Diller.  I got my tubs from Target.  It came in a pack of 5 for $6.  I am so disappointed that they no longer have the tubs.

Grab the labels here!

Name Tags

We are required to provide our kiddos with name tags just in case they get lost and for lunch number purposes.  I found the id badge clips and name badge sleeves at Walmart.  It comes in a pack of 12 for ONLY $1.69.  Now that is a bargain! I decided to incorporate my jungle theme into my id badge.

Classroom Update

Despite the fact that I have been coming in almost everyday the past two weeks and at least once a week in the month of July, I still have MAJOR work to do.  But it is slowly but surely coming along :)

Daily 5 Stamina Chart

Here's the stamina chart I have created to record and post on the wall so students can visually see their stamina.  It is made for legal size paper.
